Ever wondered about that song Su-ho and Yeong-i sang together at karaoke?

You know the one - where they're caught up in that youthful, flirty energy while Beom-seok sits there with that sulky expression, looking quietly disappointed?

There's a subtext to that song choice that I personally interpret might make you either burst out laughing or feel even sorrier for Beom-seok. This song still holds a spot on my playlist - it's practically synonymous with couple songs.

If You Love Weak Hero's OST as Much as the Show, You'll Love This

So there I was, doing my usual Sunday ritual of archiving today's comments for Twitter (thrilling life, I know!), when I stumbled across our old OST conversation thread.

Reading through those comments suddenly reminded me of something I'd completely forgotten about...

Remember that analysis video where I covered Su-ho's wordplay?

Well, there was actually another piece I wanted to include but had to scrap at the last minute: the karaoke scene subtext.

Why did I cut it? Copyright considerations - naturally, respecting original creators is important when diving into cultural layers.

Who Cast This Musical Spell on Weak Hero's OST?

Weak Hero's music director is Primary.

If you're not familiar, Primary is basically one of Korea's trendiest music producers.

We're talking about someone whose beats have soundtracked countless couple moments across the country - the man behind the musical alchemy that makes hearts flutter in karaoke rooms nationwide.

And the song Su-ho and Yeong-i were singing together at karaoke?

The one that made Beom-seok look like he'd swallowed glass?

That was "Johnny?" - one of Primary's biggest hits from 2012.

"Johnny?" - The Couple Karaoke Anthem

Let me paint you the full picture of what was really happening in that scene:

"Johnny/자니(Jani)?" literally means "are you sleeping?" - but it also carries the double meaning of "are you up?" as in staying awake late into the night.

It had already become the ultimate Korean cliché for late-night flirty texts.

The song is about some lonely guy desperately texting every woman he knows (yes, even his exes) trying to get dates.

But here's the cultural context: When two people who aren't dating yet but have "something going on" sing this at karaoke, they'll probably end up dating that day.

When couples sing this at karaoke, they literally can't stop smiling.

It's pure flirty energy - all knowing looks and playful nudges.

I used to pick this song first thing whenever I went to karaoke with my boyfriend too 😂

Now imagine watching this from Beom-seok's perspective:

  • Su-ho and Yeong-i caught up in that infectious 17-year-old energy

  • Those knowing smiles between them

  • The flirty atmosphere filling the entire room

  • Everyone else oblivious to his internal devastation

Back to the Karaoke Scene: Inside Beom-seok's Mind

He has to sit there and watch Su-ho - the person whose attention he desperately craves - caught up in this intimate, flirty moment with someone else.

While watching these two radiate that quintessential 17-year-old boy-girl energy, something darker begins stirring behind Beom-seok's expressionless, disappointed face.

This karaoke scene becomes the launching pad for his spiral downward through the only language he knows - violence - for the remaining four episodes.

In that moment, seeing their carefree youth while feeling completely excluded, the fuse is lit.

My Little (Cute) Sadistic Devil Confession

Okay, call me a little sadistic devil if you want, but thinking about the full context of that song choice and how internally pissed off Beom-seok must have been...

I can't hide this cute evil smile 😂

Of course whenever I watch Su-ho and Yeong-i singing, I'm frowning with pity for Beom-seok.

But I'm also actually smiling at the same time because I couldn't help but laugh at the show's slightly wicked yet witty choice of picking "Johnny" - the very song that would stir up Beom-seok! "Johnny" of all songs!

I think the production team knew exactly what they were doing when they chose that song.

They wanted us to feel that complex mix of emotions: Beom-seok's resentment toward Su-ho and his jealousy toward Yeong-i, all strangely intertwined.

Knowing the context of "Johnny?" makes you realize the directors' choice is masterfully stirring the pot of Beom-seok's emotions.

My take, they're not just showing us a fun karaoke scene - they're showing us the exact moment when Beom-seok's world starts to tilt off its axis.
